My Name is Lauren Hagerty,

I'm 18 years old and an Allied Health major at the University of Connecticut hoping to become a plastic surgeon. I have grown up here in New York and have lived here all of my life. I couldn't be more excited to be representing Albany for the 2012 Miss New York USA Pageant! I work at a local hardware store where I am a sales associate, I love art, painting, drawing, playing softball and spending time with my friends and family. I am a proud sister of Delta Zeta where I have learned so many things about myself and what it takes to be a strong woman in today's society.

Why would your local hardware store cashier want to be Miss New York you ask?!

WHY NOT?! I want to be Miss New York because I want to prove to everyone that being a normal American woman is sometimes the most beautiful thing and certainly a force to reckon with. I don't want to spend my life in the entertainment business; I've never modeled, seen an agent, or had a trainer of any sort (aside from my softball coaches). I want to continue my education and become a successful plastic surgeon living successfully to my own standards, not those set by the rich and famous. In such a public age there are very few women young girls have to look up to as an idol or role model. As a matter of fact, when I competed in the Miss New York Teen USA pageant in 2008 I was asked this question, and to my surprise I couldn't think of an answer. I want to be that woman that girls look to and say "wow, she's beautiful, smart, and knows the difference between pressure treated lumber and a nice piece of pine."

What exactly is the Miss New York USA Pageant?

The Miss New York Pageant is a contest that has been showcasing the beautiful women of New York for decades. The competition consists of three sections: interview, swimsuit, and evening gown. The winner of Miss New York USA will move on to represent New York in the Miss USA pageant in Las Vegas in June. This year K2 Productions will produce the New York competition. As of now, the competition will be held in Westchester County during the second weekend in January.

There are two ways of spreading light - to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.

Volunteering is a huge part of my life. Ever since I was little my family has adopted a family for Christmas, cleaned the local baseball and softball fields as well as walked/ran in multiple races all just for the simple act of giving to those less fortunate. As a child I didn't face adversity and was very fortunate to have such a loving healthy family, which lead me to two awesome charities I am more than happy to help support throughout my pageant experience! The painted Turtle Camp is a summer camp for children with terminal illness. It is a place that these children can go to have a life-changing summer camp experience, something that many of us have taken advantage of. I also will be supporting Huskython, a charity growing in popularity over the years and something students at the University of Connecticut for children with Cancer. Its so powerful being able to see the effects of volunteering first hand as the children play and enjoy the things we students have prepared for months in advance. I hope some day to bring an event like this to Albany where locally, we too can make a child's dreams come true.

So How Can You Get Involved...

This is not only an exciting time for me but for everyone in the community! It is my goal to get as many people involved in the community as possible; even if it's just talking to me at the gym or at the hardware store! However, if you would like to make a larger contribution, there are multiple options!
